AbstractThis work illustrates the dependency of vegetation types on topographic features of landscape. A Digital Elevation Model (MDE) was derived from Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) data for a small watershed in Amazonas State, Brazil. From this MDE, further geomorphometric variables were derived. A map available for the study area showed three types of vegetation, differing mainly by mean tree height and density. The geomorphometric variables, displayed as binary images, were analised statistically by histograms, which showed their discriminatory potential for the three vegetation classes. Following that, three geomorphometric variables were selected: elevation, vertical curvature and horizontal curvature. Those variables were classified by supervised and unsupervised classifiers with the vegetation map used as a reference. The resulting classifications were of moderate accuracy, with kappa coefficients of 0.43, 0.5, 0.57 for Cluster, Maximum Likelihood and Slicing, respectively.
